Spain Pavilion
back
Caso Do Minho Portuguese Centre
1080 Wall St.

Visited Sunday, 6:45 p.m.

VENUE: Seats 250. Air-conditioned.

FOOD: You can't truly experience Spain without trying the paella, a delicious saffron-flavoured rice dish with chicken and shrimp ($7.50 for large, $4.50 for small). The shrimp is extremely fresh ($4) and the spicy chorizo sausage is quite tasty ($3.25). Wash it all down with sangria, a refreshing mixture of red wine and fruit, for $4.25.

DISPLAYS: This pavilion tries its best to recreate one of the famous Granada caves in a cultural display, and a small stage in the middle allows various dancers to perform among pavilion guests.

SHOW: Renowned flamenco guitarist Jim Shewchuk is featured in the first and second shows each evening. Other entertainment is provided by the local Sol De Espana Dancers, whose gorgeous costumes and flamboyant dances make this pavilion well worth a visit.

CULTURAL HIGH POINT: The beauty, grace and excitement of the world-famous flamenco dance.

LOST IN TRANSLATION: The stage lighting was a fiasco, with dancers often left completely in the dark or blinded by strobes, but the pavilion is aware of the problem, which should be fixed for future shows.
