West Belfast picks Gerry Adams' successor as 'British' lawmaker following his move to Dublin

BELFAST, Northern Ireland - Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams was a fixture for decades in the political life of Catholic West Belfast — but he's left for the bigger stage of Ireland's parliament.

Adams' exit means the voters of his staunchly Irish-nationalist district must elect a successor Thursday for his seat in British Parliament. The 62-year-old Adams held the West Belfast post for most of the past 28 years but famously refused to take his seat in London.

Adams in February was elected for the first time to the Republic of Ireland parliament and today leads Sinn Fein in the Dublin chamber. He quit his British parliamentary and Northern Ireland Assembly positions.

Six candidates are running in the West Belfast byelection. Results are expected Friday. Sinn Fein's Paul Maskey is firm favourite.
