Arena where Chamberlain had 100-point game deemed structurally sound after fire

HERSHEY, Pa. - Officials are trying to determine the cause of a fire that damaged the roof of the historic central Pennsylvania arena where Wilt Chamberlain scored an NBA record 100 points in a game 50 years ago.

The blaze broke out around 1 p.m. Thursday at 75-year-old Hersheypark Arena in Derry Township, a facility owned by Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. There were no injuries.

Hershey spokeswoman Reilly Fies said Friday the fire caused an unknown amount of damage to the roof, but that otherwise the building is structurally sound. She says crews were replacing the roof, but officials don't know what caused the fire.

The arena opened in 1936. Chamberlain scored 100 points there for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962.
