Genetic testing confirms animal killed in Newfoundland in 2009 was wolf

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Genetic testing has confirmed that an animal killed on Newfoundland's Baie Verte Peninsula three years ago was a wolf.

The province's Environment Department says Memorial University and the University of Idaho confirmed that a large coyote-like animal trapped in 2009 was in fact a wolf.

The universities carried out the testing after they confirmed that a 37-kilogram animal shot dead on the Bonavista Peninsula was a Labrador wolf.

Wolves became extinct on the island around 1930.

They have been known to occasionally arrive from Labrador, though there is no evidence of a breeding population.

Environment Minister Terry French says his department will continue to collect animal samples for DNA analysis and report any further evidence of wolves on the island.
