Saskatoon man argues politics, religion, don't mix at government functions

SASKATOON - The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission will investigate a complaint from a man who says he was offended when a Christian prayer was read during a volunteer appreciation banquet in Saskatoon.

Ashu Solo of Saskatoon filed a complaint with the commission after Randy Donauer, a Saskatoon city councillor, offered the prayer at the banquet in April 2012.

Solo said at the time he filed the complaint that he wanted an apology from Mayor Don Atchison and Donauer, along with a promise that politics and religion would not be mixed at future government events.

Solo says the commission has found there is enough evidence to believe that part of Saskatchewan's human rights code dealing with discrimination on the grounds of religion may have been violated.

The commission will investigate the complaint and attempt mediation before considering a hearing.

Solo filed a complaint with the city last December over 'Merry Christmas' greetings that appeared on transit bus message boards. (CKOM)
