Sportsnet names figure skater Patrick Chan as top Canadian athlete in 2011
TORONTO - Sportsnet has named Toronto figure skater Patrick Chan as its Canadian athlete of the year.
Chan is coming off a career year with a gold medal at the world championships in Russia, as well as a fourth consecutive Canadian title.
The selection was made through a combination of fan voting on Sportsnet's website and by a panel of contributors from Sportsnet's various media outlets.
Other nominees included shot putter Dylan Armstrong, soccer star Christine Sinclair, NHL MVP Corey Perry and Cincinnati Reds slugger Joey Votto.
UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre of Montreal won the award the last three years.
