LIVE: Churchill, Manitoba polar bear cam a hit
It’s reality TV, Churchill-style.
Hundreds of polar bears are gathering on the banks of Hudson Bay to await the freeze-up, and a new Polar Bear Cam is there to capture it all live.
Frontiers North Adventures – the guys with the tundra buggies – have partnered with Polar Bears International and a philanthropic multi-media organization called explore.org to set up two live video feeds in the flatlands that make up the Churchill Wildlife Management Area.
"We’re all passionate about polar bears," said Frontiers North Adventures General Manager John Gunter. "When I should be working, all I’m doing is watching the polar bears."
The cameras frequently capture polar bears napping, playing with cubs and lumbering along the water’s edge. So far, the cameras have also caught a bear in the same frame as a wolverine and an Arctic fox.
The Polar Bear Cam is good for Churchill’s tourist business, but Gunter said it also helps raise awareness about the threatened species and its fragile habitat.
Polar bears are widely believed to be in danger due to climate change.
The cameras will be operating for about another month, while 200 to 300 bears migrate through the area, waiting for the bay to freeze.
