Alberta parents win fight to have children educated in non-faith-based school

MORINVILLE, Alta. - Parents in a community just north of Edmonton have won a fight to have their children taught in a public school free of religious instruction.

Alberta Education says one of four schools in Morinville run by a Catholic school board will become public in time for the next school year.

The Catholic-run schools are also public, but they include religious icons, classes, prayers at mealtimes and religious songs.

A community survey found 37 per cent of families would prefer to have their children taught in a non-faith-based school.

Education Minister Jeff Johnson says it's been a challenging and emotional issue for the community, but the change will provide parents with the choice they deserve.

The change will see the Catholic school board give up control of George P. Vanier School, which will be run by the Sturgeon public school division.
