Bus cancellation in Saskatchewan city drives home safety message to parents

MOOSE JAW, Sask. - A frantic search in frigid weather for an eight-year-old Saskatchewan boy is being used by school officials as a cautionary tale about the need for parents to pay attention for school bus cancellations.

Police in Moose Jaw say the boy went to catch his bus Thursday morning when the temperature was minus -45 C with the wind chill.

The youngster did not know his ride to class had been scrubbed much earlier because of the extreme cold.

Family, friends and complete strangers started searching when the lad failed to show up at school, but he was located safe and sound at a home not far from his own.

Clarke Baker, transportation manager for the Prairie South School Division, says there are times when circumstances can lead to the sudden cancellation of bus service.

Baker says Thursday's incident is a reminder to parents to check the local media or the division's website when weather conditions take a turn for the worse. (CHAB)
