Federal MPs to rise for summer break, returning on Sept. 17

OTTAWA - Federal MPs are expected to rise for their summer break today and are not scheduled to return to the House of Commons until Sept. 17.

Debate over the Conservative government’s omnibus budget bill dominated the waning days of the spring session.

The Conservative majority eventually passed the 400-plus page piece of legislation after a marathon 22-hour voting session last week.

The bill was then sent to the Conservative-dominated Senate, where it is expected to become law before the end of the week.

One of the last pieces of legislation to be introduced will give greater powers to the immigration and public safety ministers to determine who gets to stay in Canada.

Also Wednesday, the government moved to give the RCMP commissioner greater powers to discipline or even fire people who give the force a bad name.
