Newfoundland and Labrador consider raising minimum wage, adjusting it annually
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government will review recommendations to raise the minimum wage and adjust it annually.
Darin King, minister responsible for the Labour Relations Agency, released a report today by an advisory committee that solicited public submissions on the province's minimum wage.
The report recommends that the minimum wage be increased in 2013 to reflect the loss of purchasing power in the minimum wage since 2010.
It says the increase should give stakeholders six months notice before going into effect.
Also, the report says the minimum wage should be adjusted annually based on the previous year's all-items Consumer Price Index for the province.
The minimum wage has increased to $10 from $6 since 2005, representing a 67 per cent increase.
