Newfoundland health minister takes aim at Fraser Institute report on health care

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Newfoundland's health minister is criticizing a new report that says the province's health-care system is the most expensive in Canada.

Susan Sullivan says the report from the right-leaning Fraser Institute is flawed.

She says the institute's methodology fails to take into account that the province has the oldest population in the country.

As well, Sullivan says costs are higher because the province has 33 hospitals spread across a large geographic area serving only about a half-million people.

Economist Nadeem Ismail says the province's system is not underperforming, but he insists the cost of delivering services remains very high.
