Postmedia tells employees it wants to shift certain editorial jobs to Hamilton

TORONTO - Postmedia is giving some of its staff the option to relocate to a new Hamilton editorial hub as part of the expense cuts announced last week.

A spokeswoman confirmed that the company met with some employees at its Postmedia news agency operations in Ottawa on Tuesday to discuss whether they'd consider moving from the nation's capital.

Postmedia (TSX:PNC.B) plans to shift the jobs of certain editorial staff to Hamilton, including copy editors and headline writers.

"The roles that those people have are moving to Hamilton, and if it's the right fit, we would certainly hope to fill the expansion roles internally, if possible," said Postmedia spokeswoman Phyllise Gelfand.

The Hamilton operations already house a variety of production jobs, including page layout and sports scores.

Last week, the company announced major changes to its operating plan, which included axing several of its Sunday papers and cutting an unspecified number of jobs.

Local papers in Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa will lose their Sunday edition, while the National Post puts its Monday edition on hold for the summer.

Postmedia also plans to roll out its metered paywall to websites in additional markets with the intention of expanding it across all of its network.

The company owns the Vancouver Province, the Vancouver Sun, the Edmonton Journal, the Calgary Herald, the Regina Leader-Post, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and the Windsor Star, as well as the Canada.com online news and information portal.
