Otto and Astrid Rot make up the brother/sister fringe act Die Roten Punkte, the self-described best punk act ever to come out of Berlin. Since last summer, Astrid has spent time in "die rehab house" for her drinking problem and sipped only juice when she and her brother sat down to talk to the Free Press.
Q: What's new with Otto and Astrid?
Otto: Zis is the year of love. I wrote the song Straight-Edged Girl because zat's the kind of girl I vant to meet. If I meet a girl in Winnipeg, I bet she eats at Mondragon. I love their vegan chocolate cake.
Astrid: I zink love is a little overrated.
Q: What is your best memory of Winnipeg last summer?
O: I signed a woman's breast. I didn't know how to sign it because I could see some of the nipple.
A: He hadn't seen one before.
O: I didn't want to give sexual harassment.
Q: Do you have groupies?
A: I have a lot. Otto has a few but zay are always weird. I get a lot of alcohol. It's difficult. You have to drink so much sometimes.
Q: What would fans be surprised to learn about you?
O: I get angry. Zay think I don't have a dark side. One time I come home and Astrid has opened my Joey Ramone doll. It was in plastic and it loses its value out of the box.
A: I wanted to see if Joey Ramone has underpants on and he does. Zis is good to know.
O: She bought me a new one, Joey 2.
A: People don't know I like watching Julie Andrews movies like . I know zis is not cool to say but I used to sing her songs and pretend I vas her.
Q: Who does your makeup?
O: I'm very influenced by zat Robert Smith of The Cure. The best way to get my lipstick right zis to close my eyes, put it on my mouth and smear it as much as I possibly can. Zat's punk rock.
Q: Who would you like to do a duet with?
A: I would like to sing with zat David Bowie because he has great style. Ve vear about the same amount of makeup.
O: I'd like a duet with Tegan and Sara. I'd like to be the tofu in the middle of a Tegan and Sara sandwich.
A: I think they're gay.
O: Oh.
