Mayor says changes needed as council OKs cop advisory board

MAJOR decisions made by city council on Wednesday:

* POLICE BOARD: Council voted 11-5 in favour of Mayor Sam Katz's model for a police advisory board, amending the original plan to allow more meetings in public, as opposed to behind closed doors. Councillors Jenny Gerbasi, Mike Pagtakhan, Harvey Smith, Lillian Thomas and Dan Vandal voted in opposition.

* PESTICIDES: Council voted 15-1 to approve Gerbasi and Pagtakhan's plans for modest controls on pesticide use. Coun. Mike O'Shaughnessy voted alone in opposition.

* ACTING CAO: Council's executive policy committee approved the appointment of Alex Robinson to the role of acting Chief Administrative Officer. The former policy advisor replaces former CAO Annitta Stenning, who resigned on Friday.
