Give me a... great big win for the team

Bisons cheerleading captain Natalie Marmus burst into tears this past weekend when her last chance for victory translated into a first place win at an international competition.

"There's a lot of pressure on you to make sure you know what you're doing so you don't miss a count or a dance move," said Marmus, who will retire from the University of Manitoba team when she graduates this year. "It takes a whole team to make the routine perfect and we were pretty confident we had it."

Marmus travelled with the rest of the U of M Bisons cheerleading team to the second annual Sea to the Sky International Cheerleading Competition in Vancouver this past weekend.

Universities from all over Canada and the United States faced off in several categories. The Bisons won in the small co-ed category, where teams could only have three men on the cheerleading squad.

They also beat the winner of the large co-ed category -- Portland State University with 12 men on the team -- by 70 points. That won the Bisons the Sea and Sky Grand Champions title, co-coach Nadia El-Gabalawy said.

"By the time I saw the last pyramid hit I was crying and I just knew we did it," El-Gabalawy said. The two and a half minute routine that won the team first place started with five groups each throwing a cheerleader up in the air.

The routine also included showing off flexibility skills, basket tossing, flipping and twisting.

"It's the most exhausting two and a half minutes of your life," El-Gabalawy said.
