Weston moving to Fort Garry

The Doer government has paved the way for Weston Foods to move its bakery from the inner city and into a former provincial courthouse in Fort Garry, which will become a new state-of-the-art facility.

The province recently approved a deal in which the bakery will move from its present location on Elgin Avenue. into an empty warehouse at 1501 Chevrier Blvd., according to a recently signed government order-in-council.

The land swap will allow Weston to build a $25-million bakery and distribution centre in the south Winnipeg industrial park, on land best known as the site of a high-security courthouse.

The $3.7-million facility, a former warehouse, was redesigned for the trial of 35 people accused of being Manitoba Warriors gang members, but all the accused struck deals with the Crown to plead guilty to drug offences in exchange for some other charges being dropped, including participating in a criminal organization.

Weston plans to build a 115,000-square-foot facility on the site to replace the bakery's aging Elgin Avenue plant.

The province will acquire the Elgin property which will be made available to the Health Sciences Centre.

The city is prepared to provide Weston with a $200,000 economic development incentive grant to offset the costs of the new plant and to keep the bakery, and its 121 full-time jobs, in Winnipeg.

Weston had looked at building its new plant in Regina.
