Workshops show how to can, handle herbs

MARY Jane's Cooking School, a non-profit Wolseley-area school dedicated to providing nutritional education and hands-on cooking lessons is holding a series of autumn workshops open to the public.

Based on seasonal produce, participants will learn to can, stretch their dollar, cook with herbs or cook vegetarian in each of the classes. And they can take home what they make.

"A lot of people have expressed interest in learning how to can the traditional way," said community nutritionist Mary Jane Eason, who serves as the school's program co-ordinator.

Eason, who holds a master of science degree in nutrition, began volunteering about 10 years ago, giving occasional cooking classes in the West Broadway area and at Mount Carmel Clinic.

The classes became more structured and Eason, dietitian Diane Yu, social activist Laura Steiman, and the late Wilhelmina Howes, eventually turned the concept into the not-for-profit cooking school.

Steiman remains on the organization's board of directors as president, and while many of the school's classes are funded, a registration fee is being charged for this series.

Since Mary Jane's Cooking School opened in 1998, it has partnered with groups such as Age & Opportunity, Human Resources Development Canada, Manitoba Family Services and Housing, Canadian Mental Health Association, Manitoba Citizenship, Settlement and Labour Services Branch, and Mulvey School. It has provided cooking classes aimed at refugees, immigrants, ESL seniors, children, women in second-stage housing and women and infants nutrition classes.

The upcoming sessions, aimed at the public, each cost $100 for four classes (or $30 per class). This includes supplies.

  • You Can Can, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 17, 18, 19 and 20. The classes will include canning tomatoes and fruit, pickles, salsas, relishes, freezing fruits and vegetables.

  • On Your Own, Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23. Learn to stretch your dollar and make delicious, nutritious meals.

  • Cooking with Herbs, Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m., Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

  • Vegetarian Fare, a way of compassionate cooking, Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Nov. 6, 13, 20 & 27.

    The milk-and-coffee blended beverage, meant to be served cold, comes in individual 281 mL bottles and contains 180 calories and 3 g of fat per bottle. Javadelik is a rich, chilled coffee flavour, while Caramocha is infused with a chocolate and caramel flavour.

    Planet Java is available in grocery and convenience stores' cooler sections, with a suggested retail price of $1.99 per bottle.
