The joy of transparency

Glass artisans and suppliers can enhance your space

GLASS is an ordinary, everyday item that we don't give much consideration to unless it happens to get broken. Only then do we educate ourselves about glass retailers, replacement prices and what might be available for our replacement needs. If you go no further than that you're missing out on a whole new world of decor options.

Glass is a wonderful material to work with because of its many attributes. In skilled hands it can start as a blob of hot material into a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. Plain sheets of glass can become decorative works of etched glass art and coloured glass can be fashioned into wonderful ornamental windows, lampshades and accessories. When considering a unique way to enhance your space, look to glass artisans and suppliers to see what wonderful uses there are for this common material. You might be surprised.

Windows

Going back to that broken window I mentioned, if this does happen, consider replacing it with a stained glass, etched glass or specialty glass (like marbled glass) instead of plain old window glass. A small feature window at the head of a staircase or an unusual window (like a small hexagonal one) can be made into unique feature windows by using a decorative glass instead of plain, clear glass. Specialty glass studios can produce pieces unique to your own space. You might choose an etched glass window with your family crest or initials, for example. Glass films can also provide you with a coloured window design with less monetary investment than might be incurred with a custom stained-glass window. The film comes in a variety of styles and is designed to enhance the appearance of plain glass and can also be used to create privacy. The finishes can simulate sandblasted glass, textured glass or even offer a rice paper inspired finish. Patterns are cut into the films and they are then applied to your glass either in shop or right in your home. MPD Glass in Winnipeg offers many of these services. Check out their website for great ideas. www.mpdglass.com

Japanese-inspired piece that would serve well to divide a room while still allowing light to pass.

Doors

As with windows, doors with windows offer an array of design options. For privacy, decorative etching will let the light in but will provide the privacy you might require for a feature door. Even interior doors can be enhanced with a little imagination. The design options are pretty much unlimited and the front door of your home can become a real feature point that will ooze tons of curb appeal.

Mirrors

Don't get me started on mirrors! Yes, you can purchase mirrors in all shapes and sizes from most decor and renovation stores but have you ever considered a truly unique design for your special space? Mirrors can do wonders for the decor and a custom piece will add an extra touch. From purchasing a mirror with exact dimensions to fit a special space to creating a unique design for a wall mirror, specialty glass shops can create a custom mirror for your decor. Imagine a floor to ceiling mirror in a small bedroom or on a dining room wall or a mirror in the shape of your silhouette in a powder room. Just imagine the possibilities...

In the kitchen

A mirrored backsplash can open up a small kitchen and is a unique way of finishing this sometimes-difficult kitchen surface. A glass backsplash, in a decorative glass (like pebbled, frosted or textured glass) is another interesting consideration. Small, coloured glass tiles can be used to tile a backsplash and offer a unique look because of their unique colours and translucency.

Other great ideas

Stationary room dividers made of glass are a great way to separate space without blocking light. A partial etched glass panel installed between the bathtub and the toilet, for instance, will define the space without actually dividing it and will provide privacy to both sides. This application could also be used to divide a rectangular dining room/living room space as well.

Accessories

I happened upon a great Winnipeg glassware studio website that offered a great number of really nice glass art pieces, accessories and plates. Check out www.klassworks.com when you have a minute. The Northern Ice pieces are amazing. It's great to know that we have such talented artisans right in our own city. With the gift-giving season soon upon us it might be worth while to consider some of these handcrafted pieces. Another great site from a Winnipeg company is www.ontheedgeglass.com. (On the edge glass) They offer great decorative lamps as well as door and window panels, furniture and other unique glass creations.

Consider the various decorative applications of glass when updating your space or planning a new space. It only takes a little imagination to turn your space into a truly 'glassy' place.
