12 'Tobans are called to Order

Seven men and five women will be inducted into the Order of Manitoba, Lt.-Gov. John Harvard said Monday.

The Order of Manitoba is the highest honour the province can bestow.

Once inducted in to the order, members may use the initials O.M. after their names. The investiture ceremony will take place at the legislature July 10.

They include:

John Bock: youth, corrections, and restorative justice advocate;

Catherine (Myrtle) deMeulles: Métis artist, elder, and storyteller;

David G. Friesen: business and community leader;

David Gislason: founding member Manitoba Leafcutter Bec Association and Icelandic community leader;

Helen Preston Glass: pioneer in the evolution of the nursing profession;

Romulo F. Magsino: educator, and leader in the Filipino-Canadian community;

Robert Ronald McLean: aboriginal magistrate, advocate, and minister to his community;

Sophia Rabliauskas: environmental activist and member of Poplar River First Nation;

Hartley T. Richardson: noted business leader, philanthropist, and community volunteer;

Peter Sawatzky, master-class brass sculptor;

Evelyn Shapiro: instrumental to Canada's first provincewide home care program;

Muriel Smith: status of woman and human rights advocate.
