ATV crash kills boy, 11

EXPERTS say Manitoba needs to impose tougher ATV regulations after an 11-year-old Portage la Prairie boy was killed when an off-road vehicle crashed on Friday.

RCMP said two 11-year-old boys were operating a large, two-seater ATV on a farm east of Portage la Prairie around 3:30 p.m. Friday when the vehicle flipped over. The passenger escaped without injury, but the 11-year-old boy who was driving was trapped under the overturned vehicle and later died at Portage General Hospital.

It appears the boys may have hit a slope in the ground, causing the large, heavy vehicle to flip over, he said.

Few dollars led to slaying

A dispute over a few dollars led to the fatal stabbing of a 24-year-old father of two earlier this week, police said Saturday, as they announced they had arrested a suspect in the case.

Winnipeg police said Derek Robert Spence was robbed of a "small amount of money" before he was stabbed in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue early Friday morning.

Winnipeg police Const. Jason Michalyshen said the victim became involved in a dispute with an acquaintance over a small amount of money. He said the situation escalated, and the victim was robbed and physically assaulted to his upper body.

Between 15 and 20 minutes later, Michalyshen said, the victim encountered the man again, and became involved in another dispute.

A third man intervened and stabbed the victim in the upper body.

Leonard Leslie Murdock, 23, has been charged with manslaughter. He is in custody at the Provincial Remand Centre.

Police seek escaped con

POLICE are looking for a 54-year-old man who escaped from Rockwood Institution late Thursday morning.

Stephen Saunders was serving a two-year, six-month sentence at the minimum-security facility for possessing stolen goods, driving while disqualified, possessing a weapon, mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000. He began serving his sentence in March 2010.

He is 5'6", weighs 166 pounds, has grey hair, a grey beard and brown eyes. Anyone with information is asked to contact their local police.

Fogging resumes in city

CITY fogging crews were set to return to Winnipeg streets Saturday night -- if the weather co-operated -- due to an increase in nuisance mosquito activity.

Until further notice, crews will fog with malathion daily between 9:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.

Locations will be released at least eight hours in advance; to find out where city crews will be fogging, citizens can visit the city's website at www.winnipeg.ca/bugline or call 311.
