Peer into the dancing Abyss
While the Abyss watch has a unique, blue LED look, it's the marketing material that really caught my eye. Case in point, the description of what happens when you tap the black touchscreen to see the time displayed in blue LEDs is as follows: "the screen explodes with blue and white LED pixies like a thousand baby Bruce Springsteens dancing in the dark against a thousand Billy Idols dancing with themselves in a River Dance to the Death!" Seriously, how can you not want one of these now? At $78.00, including shipping to Canada, it's a bargain, especially if the instructions were written by the same guy who did the promo blurb. Available from www.chinavision.com.
That's some opener, Bob
How many times have you found yourself sitting around having a cold, bottled beverage and cursed the fact that you had to remove the cap in order to insert a straw? Maybe you're worried about wasps getting in your drink, or perhaps you just want to show off your straw-handling technique. Anyway, if this is an issue in your life, the BottleBob is your answer. It punches a neat hole in any bottle cap -- plastic or metal -- allowing a straw to be used without removing the cap. Yup, that's all it does. The BottleBob is $21.00 (plus $20.00 shipping to Canada) from www.epauletshop.com.
Be your own spy agency
Canadian toy company Spinmaster is getting a little sinister with its Air Hogs line of radio-controlled vehicles. The Hawkeye RC chopper sounds like something out of the CIA's secret closet. It's an indoor RC helicopter, complete with onboard stabilization to cut down on crashes, and a rechargeable battery. Nothing too ominous there. However, it includes the ability to capture up to five minutes of video at 320 x 240 resolution, or you can take hundreds of 640 x 480 still-photo snaps using photo buttons on the controller. Plug in a USB key and you can examine your surveillance footage on a PC or Mac. While the CIA version would likely run you a few million dollars, you can pick up a Hawkeye for about $65.
Every day is a picnic
Anyone who's gone to the park for a picnic when it's busy knows there isn't always a picnic table around when you need one. The Picnic Time Portable Picnic Table has your back, with a four-seat (each capable of holding up to 113 kg) aluminum alloy and polyethylene resin table of your own, with a 90 cm by 65 cm table top. The whole works collapses down into a handy carrying case with handle. Available in red, hunter green, blue or black. There are also versions available in the colours of select U.S. college teams, or you could just go old school and carve your initials in the top. Sold through www.factorydirect2you.com for $94.33 plus $44.43 for shipping to Canada.
Take this for an iSpin
Apple recently trademarked the iBike name, which sounds like they may be up to something in the cycling area sometime in the future. In the meantime, the LiveRider is available now. The software component is a free download from the App Store, while the hardware includes a secure, shock-absorbing mounting system for iPhone (or iPod Touch) and a sensor unit with wireless 2.4 GHz transmitter. With all the pieces together, LiveRider mounts your iPhone on the handlebars of your bike, measuring and displaying real-time data such as bike speed, average speed and calories burned, as well as location and inclination -- assuming your iDevice has GPS. Data can be saved for performance analysis, reviewed graphically or exported. Hardware is available from www.newpotatotech.com for $99.99. Shipping to Canada is free.
