Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION

Your weekend weather

I hate to be a Nattering Nabob of Negativity this early in the new year, kids, but I can't help myself.

You know what I'm talking about, Winnipeg. This simply isn't right. This is not the way we Winnipeggers roll, if you catch my weather-related drift. The evidence is impossible to ignore: People are wandering around outside in their shirt sleeves, laughing and smiling, barbecuing in the back yard. What the (very bad word) is wrong with you, Winnipeg?

According to the weather office, today will be mainly cloudy with a high of -8 C, which is a little bit more in line with our normal high of -13 C at this time of year. Sadly, it'll sneak up to -2 C on Sunday and (ALERT: put your coffee down before you read this next bit) a balmy 4 C on Monday.

But do not despair, Winnipeg. There's a 30 per cent chance of flurries on Tuesday and, best of all, winter will come storming back on Wednesday and Thursday when the temperature dips down to a Winnipegtastic -15 C.

Is that good news, or what, Winnipeg? (Hint: Yes, it's great news) It's going to get colder and we'll be able to engage in our favourite winter activity -- moaning like cranky kindergarten kids.

In other fun winter activities, this is the last Saturday to check out the more than one million sparkly lights at the Canad Inns Winter Wonderlands drive-thru light show at Red River Exhibition Park. Need more? Take your filthy car in to get washed, stock up on windshield-wiper fluid, or take your beloved to see Shirley Valentine at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Whatever you do, stay strong. A real Winnipeg winter is just down the road. Get ready to grumble!
