Police thwart drug deal
A tip to Winnipeg police just before noon Thursday resulted in a drug deal in West Broadway being interrupted and several suspects leading officers on a foot chase before they were caught.
Winnipeg police said uniformed patrol officers and the tactical support team went to a home in the 300 block of Langside after getting a tip of a drug deal going down and weapons being spotted.
When officers arrived, three suspects fled on foot and police went after them.
At the home, officers found a 59-year-old man and a shotgun that was improperly stored. The man is facing several firearms-related charges. He was released on a promise to appear in court.
Meanwhile, police chased down one of the suspects, a 21-year-old woman, near the rear of the 300 block of Portage Avenue.
The two other suspects, a 21-year-old man and 17-year-old boy, fled in the opposite direction and were arrested after getting on a Winnipeg Transit bus at Osborne Street and Pembina Highway.
Police said they found about $600 worth of crack cocaine on the woman and a knife and five milligrams of oxycodone pills on the man.
All three young people were taken into custody and are facing several drug and weapon-related charges.
Three arrests in spree
THREE teenagers are facing numerous charges after a crime spree in St. James on Thursday.
Winnipeg police say cruisers and the Air1 police helicopter rushed to the 300 block of Conway Street about 2:50 a.m. after a report of property damage in progress. A parked pickup truck was discovered with a smashed window.
About 30 minutes later, with the help of the police helicopter, police found two suspects near Ness Avenue and Winchester Street.
About 5:40 a.m., a third suspect was arrested after police stopped him at St. John's Avenue and Charles Street while allegedly driving a stolen 2009 Ford Focus.
Police believe the three suspects are connected to a string of crimes. Those include the theft of a shovel in the 300 block of Conway that was used to smash the window of a parked vehicle; breaking into a parked vehicle in the 400 block of Conway; and one of the suspects breaking into a home in the 400 block of Parkview Street, taking a purse and using a set of keys to steal a vehicle.
A 19-year-old male and 16-year-old male have been detained in custody, while a 17-year-old male has been released on a promise to appear.
