RCMP destroy bear near Steinbach school

Steinbach RCMP killed a black bear this morning after it wandered too close to a school.

Cpl. Miles Hiebert said that the adult bear was first spotted downtown about 8:30 a.m. in front of the Shoppers Drug Mart. Police followed the highly-agitated bear as it moved quickly throughout the city.

RCMP contacted Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship; however, their officers were not able to immediately attend, Hiebert said.

RCMP officers followed the bear into a residential area in the vicinity of a school. This was the first day of students returning to school, and police report there were large numbers of children in the area.

"As the bear was acting in an agitated manner in a residential area, the decision was made to destroy the bear in the interest of public safety," Hiebert said.
