1,800 hydro customers north of city without power

About 1,800 Manitoba Hydro customers north of Winnipeg have been without power since 6:15 this morning after equipment failed.

The power went out in Lockport, the RM of St. Clements and East Selkirk, said Manitoba Hydro spokesman Glenn Schneider. The power outage was caused by an equipment failure at the substation in East Selkirk, he said.

It caused some arcing and damage to other equipment in the substation, Schneider said.

"We have crews on site to repair the damaged equipment," he said.

"It looks like we might have to bring in a portable substation to provide service," he said. "The power outage may extend into the afternoon."
