Highways open, but police advise caution when driving

All major highways have reopened but many remain partly covered with snow and poor driving conditions remain.

The TransCanada Highway between Headingley and Virden finally reopened near noon today, after closing early Friday evening. Highway 16 also reopened.

Meanwhile, Winnipeg police are telling people to drive according to conditions; in other words,  slow down.

Winnipeggers awoke to a temperature of -19 C, and -33 C with the wind chill.

About 10 centimetres of snow fell overnight, and snow drifts are making driving difficult on residential streets as well as highways.

Northerly winds of 40 km/h gusting to 60 will fall to 20 this afternoon. The frigid temperatures will remain steady.

The forecast for tonight is a low of -25 with a wind chill of -30. A high of -20 and wind chill of -32 is forecast for Sunday.
