2 Winnipeggers test positive for West Nile

Two Winnipeggers tested positive for West Nile virus after they donated blood last week, Manitoba Health said today.
Both donors were in their 40s and from the Winnipeg Health Region, Canadian Blood Services reported to Manitoba Health. They donated blood on July 26 and 27, and a blood-screening test showed they had the virus.
One of the donors reported mild symptoms, while the other had no symptoms.
Manitoba Health is investigating to find out where they might have contracted the virus.
Hot and humid weather over the last few weeks has been ideal for the development of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, which carry West Nile.
Manitoba Health said on July 26 there was a high risk of exposure to West Nile virus throughout southern Manitoba.
The department continues to urge Manitobans to do everything they can to avoid mosquito bites -- even when there don't appear to be many of the biting bugs around.
So far this season, 20 mosquito samples have been identified as testing positive for the West Nile virus in 14 communities across the province. None were identified last year.
To reduce the West Nile risk, the province encourages Manitobans to spend less time outdoors at peak mosquito hours at dawn and dusk, use mosquito repellent, and wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes.
Residents should make sure their window and door screens are fitted tightly and are free of holes, and should empty standing water around their homes, such as in eavestroughs or old tires.
