$202.5M worth of building permits issued in September

Manitoba was one of only three provinces to see an increase in building permit activity from August to September, according to new Statistics Canada figures released today.

The agency said Manitoba municipalities issued $202.5 million worth of residential and non-residential permits in September. That was an increase of 13.2 per cent from the previous month, when $178.9 million worth of permits were issued.

September’s total was also a 40.1 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when only $144.5 million worth of permits were issued in the province.

The only other two provinces to see a month-over-month increase in permit totals were Nova Scotia and British Columbia, at 24.6 per cent and 14.5 per cent respectively.

Eight of the other nine provinces saw year-over-year gains ranging from three per cent to 55.8 per cent. The exception was New Brunswick, with a 13.5 per cent decline.

Nationally, the value of building permits issued fell by 13.2 per cent from August to September — $6.5 billion from $7.5 billion — but was up 15.6 per cent from a year earlier.
