The start of the City of Winnipeg's fall swimming-lesson registration period has kept the 311 system busy.
City spokeswoman Alissa Clark said the 311 telephone system -- one of four methods for residents to register for recreation programs -- has been experiencing higher-than-normal call volumes due to Leisure Guide registrations.
She said this has become a normal occurrence for the first day of registration every session.
Clark said 311 has 123 phones lines. Additional callers have to wait until an operator is available.
While there were unconfirmed reports of two-hour waits Tuesday morning, the wait time in the afternoon was six minutes and 30 seconds.
Clark said at 1 p.m. Tuesday, there were 70 callers on hold waiting to speak to a 311 operator.
Clark said at no point Tuesday did the 311 system collapse or shut down as a result of the large call volume.
A 311 operator contacted Tuesday afternoon by the Free Press said swimming-lesson registration usually takes about five to 10 minutes for one child and possibly up to 30 minutes for families with several children.
Registration began at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning for swimming lessons only.
Registration for all other Leisure Guide recreational programming begins this morning at 8 a.m., along with the continuation of swimming-lesson registration.
Calling 311, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is only one way to register for recreational programming. Other methods include:
