$425,000 to go for work on historic building

RED River College received close to half a million dollars Thursday toward its ongoing restoration of the Union Bank Tower, slated to open in 2011.

The college will receive up to $425,000 from Parks Canada's national historic sites cost-sharing program.

The college will use the money to restore and repair the historic doors and windows on the first three floors of the building, as well as renovations to the front foyer and banking hall.

The 104-year-old structure at the corner of Main Street and William Avenue, regarded as the first skyscraper in western Canada, is being converted into a culinary and hospitality school, restaurant and student residences.

The Gault Building, better known today as Artspace, also received funding. Just over $32,000 was given to help preserve the buildings iconic roof-fence.
