In Brief

No alcohol in victims

NONE of the three young university softball players who drowned earlier this month -- including a young woman from Manitoba -- had alcohol in their system when their vehicle sank into a North Dakota pond.

Stark County Sheriff Clarence Tuhy said partial toxicology reports came back negative on Ashley Neufeld, 21, of Brandon, and Kyrstin Gemar, 22, and 20-year-old Afton Williamson, both from California.

"There was no alcohol found in either of the girls and the cause of death was drowning," Tuhy said Thursday.

The three women -- all students at Dickinson State University -- were believed to have been out stargazing on Nov. 1 when they drove a Jeep into a 3.6-metre-deep pond in dark conditions near Dickinson, in southwestern North Dakota. Their bodies were found in the vehicle two days later.

Woman assaulted

WINNIPEG police are warning the public to be on the lookout after five or six men pushed their way into a North End home and assaulted a woman.

The attack occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of Pritchard Avenue.

The suspects are aboriginal in appearance and were wearing black clothes, according to witnesses.

Police ask anyone with information to call District 3 detectives at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at 786-8477.

Man faces several charges

POLICE have arrested a man after a string of break-and-enters and assaults over six months in Winnipeg.

Police said on May 27 two men got into a fight with a group of four men near Killarney Avenue and Pembina Highway. Three of the men were injured, said police, and some of the victims had broken bones.

On June 2, police said a man got into a fight with an employee at a hotel on the 1800 block of Pembina Highway. The employee was not seriously injured. The same day, a man went to a store at the St. Vital Shopping Centre where he stole some goods.

In October, police tried to stop the same man when he was driving near Silver Avenue and Parkview Street, but the driver fled.

Daniel James Roy is charged with five counts of break and enter, utter threats, theft under $5,000, and dangerous driving.
