Silvia de Sousa
of Thompson Dorfman Sweatman has been nationally recognized as a Deloitte Woman of Influence. Her practice is concentrated in business law with an emphasis on intellectual property law, life sciences and technology.
Arnold Asham
founder and president of Asham Curling Supplies as well as founder of the Asham Stompers, is the recipient of the Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. He was presented with the award on Saturday at the Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce's gala dinner.
McCain Foods (Canada)
received the Environmental Leadership Award from Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation as part of the Energy 2009 Lean and Green Conference. The company received the award for its energy recovery system at its potato-processing plant in Carberry. The system captures heat from the fryer and uses it to preheat water used in manufacturing, reducing the use of natural gas.
Roger Maltman, a driver with Bison Transport since 1994, has reached two million accident-free consecutive safe driving miles. Maltman is seen on prairie highways as part of Bison's long combination vehicle (LCV) network where he hauls in combination two 53-foot trailers simultaneously with a single tractor. Bison Transport will formally recognize Maltman's achievement at its annual awards banquet.
Exchange District BIZ Awards of Excellence
Winnipeg Foundation received the Development Award for contributing to the Old Market Square redevelopment project; Siloam Mission, the Image Award for its commitment to beautifying downtown and providing life, employment and financial training to its participants; Winnipeg Arts Council's Public Art Program for its contribution to the district's poster board project; Destination Award to Jazz Winnipeg for promoting the district as an entertainment destination; Advocacy Award to Bartley Kives of the Winnipeg Free Press for keeping the public informed about news in the Exchange District, and for enhancing the area's profile; Volunteerism Award, to Sheena Desjardins of the Exchange Patrol for contributing 500 volunteer hours to the patrol program; Support Award, to Ryan Mayberry of Mayberry Fine Art for volunteer service to the Exchange District BIZ, and for redevelopment of the BIZ website; and Style Award, to Bonny Fraser of My Secret Garden for her creative storefront displays. The awards were presented at the AGM held Nov. 25.
Downtown Winnipeg BIZ Achievement Awards
were presented at the BIZ's recent AGM to: Santa Claus Parade for Outstanding Downtown Tradition; University of Winnipeg for Outstanding Long-Term Commitment and Growth; Hotel Fort Garry for Outstanding Commitment to Development and Innovation; MTS Centre for Outstanding Contribution to Downtown Visits (5 million in five years) and Kite and Kaboodle, Outstanding Small Business.
