Third crash victim dies

A third victim is dead after a horrific crash in Ontario last week involving a Winnipeg family.

Jewan Kim, 18, died after the July 22 crash that also claimed the lives of his mother Chae Nyeo Hyeon, 46 and brother Jeseon (Jeff) Kim, 19.

Jewan Kim was in hospital fighting for his life after the Dodge Caravan his family was in went off Highway 17A and hit a rock before bursting into flames.

He died Wednesday at hospital in Thunder Bay, family friend Harry Yoon in Winnipeg told the Free Press.

Hyeon's husband, Soo Hyun Kim, 47, remains in hospital, and has regained consciousness, Yoon said.

"He has improved quite a bit but still has some lung damage" and a broken ribcage, said Yoon.

A funeral for all three will be held Saturday. Family members from South Korea have arrived in Winnipeg.

New clinic planned

A new $4.2-million ACCESS clinic will be built at the corner of Keewatin Street and Burrows Avenue, provincial officials announced Thursday.

Construction of the ACCESS Nor'West health and social services centre is slated to begin later this year. The clinic will be complete by late 2011 and include diabetes education and support, nutrition counselling, foot care, aboriginal health outreach and services for immigrant women.

The Nor'West clinic will be the fourth ACCESS centre in Winnipeg.

2 more join council race

WINNIPEG has two more city council hopefuls for its upcoming municipal election.

Harry Wolbert will be contesting councillor Gord Steeve's seat in the St. Vital ward, and said he planned to "shake things up," at city council.

He filed his papers on Wednesday.

"I don't like the direction the city is going in regards to crime," said Wolbert.

Wolbert has lived in St. Vital for eight years and works in the social services field.

The second entrant is Shaneen Robinson, running for council in the Elmwood - East Kildonan ward.

A former CTV reporter Robinson received the endorsement of the NDP, and filed her registration papers on Thursday.

The civic election will take place on Oct. 27.

Man assaulted, robbed

POLICE are seeking suspects after a 33-year-old man was assaulted and robbed near Burrows Avenue Wednesday evening.

Police said the man was cycling on a path along the river near the 100-block of Burrows at about 8:30 p.m. when another man jumped out of the bushes and hit him with a blunt instrument several times.

Two other men joined the attack before robbing the man and fleeing with his bike, police said.

The men are described as aboriginal in appearance, between 20 and 30 years old, with long black hair. Two wore prescription glasses and had bushy eyebrows, police said.

The stolen bicycle is described as a green mountain bike with the word "Cyclone" written on it.

Anyone with more information can call Division 13 detectives at 986-2848, or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
