All hail the special claims centre.

Following a crush of claims after hail hammered some areas of Winnipeg and southern Manitoba on Monday afternoon, Manitoba Public Insurance has opened a special claims centre for hail-damaged vehicles only.

There have been nearly 1,000 hail claims to date, an MPI press release said.

The Winnipeg hail claim centre is at MPI's Bison Service Centre at 15 Barnes St. and will be handling "hail only" estimating appointments.

"In order to respond to the higher than usual number of new claims, it was decided to establish this special centre," Christine Martin, MPI vice-president of service operations, said in a statement. "We realize many people are concerned about their vehicles. Providing the best service possible to our customers has always been the number one priority of our Corporation."

The special Winnipeg centre will be able to take 300 appointments per day and will be open Monday to Saturday.

Owners must first book appointments through the MPI contract centre by calling 204-985-7000. The line is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
