Autumn snowstorm packs powerful punch

Thursday’s autumn snowstorm that slammed into southern Manitoba has sparked a winter storm warning from Environment Canada for the Pinawa and Seven Sisters Falls regions.

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, there have been reports of four to 25 centimetres of wet snow accumulating in eastern Manitoba and high winds that have caused power outages and dangerous road conditions, the Environment Canada warning said.

RCMP have reported vehicles in the ditch on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Steinbach intersection.

Twenty-five centimetres of snow fell in Vita, where firefighters fought blazes that destroyed four homes and a bridge on Tuesday in bone-dry conditions, according to Environment Canada.

Bissett received 20 cm, Pinawa 10 cm and Steinbach between four and eight cm, the warning said.

The band of snow was over the Whiteshell this evening and tracking northward overnight.

The snow is expected to continue on Friday, but localized accumulations will vary, Environment Canada said.
