University of Winnipeg president Lloyd Axworthy will receive an honorary doctorate during a visit to Ukraine next week.
Axworthy will receive the honorary degree on Monday during a visit to the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. A release from the University of Winnipeg said Axworthy is being recognized for the U of W’s commitment to creating an environmentally sustainable campus and meeting the university’s goal of becoming compliant with the Kyoto Protocol.
Axworthy will also sign a memorandum of understanding with the university creating the Sustainable Campus Project, which will see the universities exchange faculty and staff.
"We have a long-standing and deep relationship with the Ukrainian community at home and in Ukraine, and I am honoured to be cementing stronger ties with four leading educational facilities," Axworthy said in a statement.
"This visit builds on our common beliefs – an unwavering commitment to sustainable practices, the strengthening of democratic principles and human rights, and the value of academic excellence and public service."
Axworthy will also sign other memoranda of understanding creating partnerships between the U of W’s faculties of business and theology and universities in Ukraine. Axworthy is also delivering keynote addresses on human rights while he’s in the country.
