Bill aims to keep tuition hikes close to inflation rate

A bill introduced this week by the Manitoba government would keep university tuition increases in line with the rate of inflation.

"Our tuition fees are already among the lowest in the country and we want to keep them that way," Advanced Education Minister Erin Selby said today.

Bill 2 would empower the Council on Post-Secondary Education (COPSE), the agency that plans and co-ordinates the development of the post-secondary education system, to work with universities to keep tuition hikes in line with inflation.

The new legislation would also require COPSE to ensure universities know how much money they will receive in operating grants for three years at a time.
