After providing thousands of Winnipeg families with hampers this holiday season, the Christmas Cheer Board got a gift of its own today.
Manitobans Kirby and Marie Fontaine, who won a $50 million Lotto MAX jackpot in 2009, presented the local charity with a cheque for $50,000.
The donation came only hours after the Cheer Board announced it would likely fall $50,000 to $60,000 short of its $900,000 fundraising goal.
Kai Madsen, executive director of the Cheer Board, said the donation was the largest the organization has received in its 93-year existence.
"That’s never, ever happened in the history of the Cheer Board," he said. "I don’t know how to put it into words. It’s unbelievable."
