Brandon man dies in two-vehicle head-on collision

A 21-year-old Brandon man died in a head-on collision near Portage la Prairie this morning, RCMP report.

The fatal collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Highway 242 about four kilometres south of the Trans Canada Highway in the RM of North Norfolk.

Initial investigation indicates that a 1997 Nissan Maxima was southbound on the two-lane undivided highway when it was in a head-on collision with a northbound semi trailer, RCMP Cpl. Miles Hiebert said.

Witnesses report that the Nissan Maxima crossed the centre dividing line into the path of oncoming traffic.

The driver of the semi, a 37-year-old man from the RM of North Norfolk, was not injured. The RCMP have not released the name of the man who died in the collision.

There were no other persons or vehicles involved in the collision, and road conditions were reported to be good.

An RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst is attending to assist with the investigation.
