The Miles Macdonell Buckeyes Friday pulled off the biggest upset so far in the Winnipeg High School Football League quarter-finals.
The Buckeyes defeated last year’s ANAVETS Bowl finalist Oak Park Raiders 22-13 under the bright lights at the University of Manitoba turf field in Potter AAA action. The Buckeyes were one of three bottom-ranked teams in the Potter AAA division to win their first-round playoff games along with the Dakota Lancers and Murdoch MacKay Clansmen.
"It’s just surreal right now, Oak Park was the No. 2 team in Manitoba and for us to win this, it means a lot," said Buckeyes offensive/defensive lineman Josh Castillo-Toledo.
Running back Houston Rennie scored the first touchdown for Miles Mac, which led 6-3 at the half.
Oak Park came out in the third quarter with a touchdown by running back Xavier Prime and then recovered an on-side kick to set up a field goal for a 13-6 lead.
In the mid-third quarter, Buckeyes' quarterback Jayden McKoy connected on a 55-yard touchdown strike to Devon Jordan-Patenaude followed by a two-point conversion to take back the lead. In the fourth quarter, Rennie scored his second major of the game, a two-yard receiving touchdown, which was followed by another two-point convert for the win.
In the other Potter AAA division games, Dakota needed overtime to defeat Vincent Massey-Winnipeg 13-10 and the Murdoch MacKay Clansmen beat the Sisler AAA Spartans 31-26. In the Currie A division, the Steinbach Sabres beat the Fort Frances Muskies 30-0 and the Sisler A Spartans defeated the Dryden Eagles 13-6. In the Vidruk AA division, the Kelvin Clippers beat the West Kildonan Wolverines 39-8.
The WHSFL’s semifinals will be played next week at East Side Field. The match-ups are: Steinbach vs. Sisler and Neelin vs. Beaver Brae on Wednesday in the A division, Kelvin vs. River East and Grant Park vs. Vincent Massey-Brandon on Thursday in the AA division, and St. Paul’s vs. Murdoch and Miles Mac vs. Dakota in the AAA division on Friday.
