Building permits jump in April
WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s construction industry made up lost ground in March, posting a double-digit increase in building-permit activity after seeing permit values fall by 4.8 per cent the previous month.
Statistics Canada figures released today show there were $222.8 million worth of permits issued during the month by Manitoba municipalities. That was a gain of 15.6 per cent from February’s total of $192.7 million.
It was also a whopping 42.6 per cent improvement over March 2011’s total of $156.3 million.
StatsCan said Manitoba’s month-over-month gain was the fifth biggest provincial gain, and was due to increased activity in both the residential and non-residential sectors. The year-over-year increase was second biggest month the provinces.
Nationally, permit values increased by 4.7 per cent to $6.8 billion in March. That followed a 7.6 per cent increase in February. However, it was down slightly — 0.2 per cent — from a year earlier.
