Bus drivers back at work for school division

A Winnipeg School Division school bus strike has been averted, the union representing drivers said yesterday.

UFCW Local 832 members working at First Student Canada ratified a new three-year agreement by 66 per cent on Sunday.

The new agreement means drivers will be paid by the hour for their regular routes and a flat rate for extra routes, such as for field trips.

Last week, the drivers voted 68 per cent against the tentative agreement the union and employer had reached after conciliation. Local 832 president Jeff Traeger said at the time 68 full-time and 14 part-time drivers would take home less money with First Student Canada's offer.

The agreement comes weeks before students head back to class.

WSD school bus services are contracted out to First Student Canada, a private U.S.-based firm.

Earlier this summer, the drivers gave the United Food and Commercial Workers a 95 per cent strike vote, which could have gone into effect when the current deal expires Aug. 27.
