Risk of sewer backups in Swan River threaten Games

SWAN RIVER -- The state of the 2012 Manitoba Summer Games is in question after the town's mayor announced a "local state of emergency."

The announcement late Wednesday came after word that a failure to the local lift station was creating a risk of sewage backup.

All residents in the area, including the thousands here for the games, were asked to reduce all water consumption.

The town had asked the public to refrain from flushing the toilet, showering and to make sure all drains are plugged.

When asked whether this will have an effect on the games, organizers hoped it would not, but said contingency plans were being made.

This comes a week after the area received heavy rain storms that saw more than 190 millimetres of rain fall.
