Candlelight vigil and walk held this morning in city

Groups and individuals in Manitoba will be marking the annual National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women today.

It was on Dec. 6, 1989 that 14 female students at Montreal's École Polytechnique were killed by a gunman in a massacre at the school.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees held a Candle Light Vigil and Walk to commemorate the day at 7:30 a.m. today.

This morning the Manitoba Federation of Labour Women's Committee will hold a gathering at 11:45 a.m. at the Union Centre Auditorium on the second floor.

"The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women gives us an opportunity to come together and mourn the women who were killed in Manitoba since the last Day of Remembrance," said Charlene Matheson, the Manitoba Federation of Labour Women's Committee chair.

"It is a moment for us to focus on the ongoing reality of violence against women and to rededicate ourselves to the effort to eradicate it."

At the University of Manitoba, the fourth-year students at the Northern Social Work Program will hold a discussion that is open to the public from 9:30 a.m.-noon on how Thompson can become a safe place for female students.
