A fire forced people out of a Carman seniors’ home early Monday morning.
Thirty-four residents were safely evacuated after an overnight fire at Boyne Lodge Seniors’ residence, according to a member of the Carman Dufferin emergency management team.
Fire alarms went off at the facility at 4:30 a.m., and the evacuees were transferred to the Carman Hospital, the Carman seniors' centre and the local community hall, where a reception area has been opened.
"We are unsure at this point what happened," said Mary Heard, director of health services for the Southern Regional Health Authority. "The cause of the fire is still under investigation, so we’re not quite sure how it started."
While there were no casualties or injuries, those in need of care are being looked after by Southern Regional Health Authority medical staff and volunteers with the local emergency response team.
"The evacuation went really, really well," Heard added. "Obviously we have an emergency plan for things like this. We were able to move everybody out in a timely manner."
The ward at the Boyne Lodge Seniors’ residence actually has 37 beds, but three were not in use at the time of the fire.
The extent of damage to the building is still unknown.
