Celebration of Chinese culture set for this weekend

Winnipeg’s Chinese community is throwing a party this weekend, and all of Manitoba is invited.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts group, Chinese cultural organizations across the city will host special "China Culture Day" events throughout the weekend.

The fun starts Friday evening, when Kum Koon Garden on King Street serves up 10 courses of Chinese cuisine. The special dinner, which starts at 7 p.m., will also feature performances of traditional Chinese dance, acrobatics and puppetry. Tickets for the dinner are $35 each.

On Saturday, the Sichuan Acrobatic Troupe and the Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts will set up at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park for a full day of high-flying fun that runs from noon to 9 p.m. In addition to a traditional lion dance, there will also be a craft market and Chinese food and bubble tea for purchase.

On Sunday, the celebration wraps up with a full-day cultural workshop that will introduce youth aged 5 to 18 to Chinese traditions including dance, paper cutting, kung-fu and acrobatics. The workshop, which takes place at the Great Wall Dance Academy on Waverley Street, costs $20 and includes lunch.
