Cell shops raided; sale of counterfeit parts suspected

Four Winnipeg cellular phone repair shops got a special visit from the RCMP Tuesday after allegations they were selling counterfeit parts.

RCMP Federal Enforcement Section searched two locations from the 500 and 600 blocks of Portage Avenue along with one from the 500 block of St. Anne’s Road and Kildonan Place.

The outlets were searched on the suspicion they were selling knockoff cellular phone components and accessories including brands such as Apple and Blackberry.

Parts seized included screens, speakers, cases and covers, all of which accounted to a retail value of more than $100,000.

The investigation remains ongoing.
