CEOs raise $94K for downtown non-profits
A night out in the cold for a bunch of CEOs will now bring a warm fuzzy feeling to a trio of downtown non-profits.
On Tuesday, the Downtown Business Improvement Zone announced three downtown organizations will receive $94,000 towards programs that help homeless men, women and youth.
The money was raised through the Downtown BIZ’s inaugural Change For The Better CEO Sleepout, which saw a cadre of local business high-rollers camping out for one night on downtown streets to raise money for charity.
The biggest beneficiary of those funds is Princess Street shelter Siloam Mission, which will receive $50,000 to help fund its Mission: Off The Streets Team. The five-year-old program helps get homeless men and women back on their feet through paid work experience and social support.
Another group benefiting from the funds is Graffiti Art Programming Inc. The urban art outreach studio will get $24,200 to help bolster its new Young Parents Program in Portage Place Mall. The program offers art and leadership training for young parents and employs them to create downtown art installations.
Change For The Better will also give the Red Road Lodge $19,800 to help fund REACH, a program that employs 10 people living in poverty to help clean and maintain the downtown area.
Donations can still be made to the Downtown BIZ’s Change For The Better program at changeforthebetter.org.
