Charges laid in deadly collision near The Pas

The driver of a pick-up truck that collided with another truck just north of The Pas last week is facing charges.

RCMP said John Anthony Ducharme, 44, of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, has been charged with impaired driving causing death and driving while prohibited.

Ducharme was allegedly driving a southbound pick-up on Dec. 21 on Highway 10, about 15 kilometres north of The Pas, when he drifted across the centre lane and struck a northbound pick-up.

The force of the collision threw both trucks into the east ditch. Both drivers had to be extricated from their trucks.

The driver of the northbound truck, a 63-year-old man from Shoal River First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said his name will not be released.

Ducharme was taken to hospital in stable condition.

The collision remains under investigation and police said additional charges will likely be filed against Ducharme.
